The 2001 Kennedy Half Dollar saw similar circulation mintages to the previous year, with about 20 million coins struck each at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities. The majority of these pieces were issued into the channels of general circulation, with about one million pieces included in the annual uncirculated mint sets.
As had become customary, there were two collectible proof versions of the coin struck for collectors. The first was the standard composition proof included in the 2001 Proof Set. The second was the 90% silver composition proof included in the 2001 Silver Proof Set. Both coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint and carried the "S" mint mark.
