The obverse design of the half-dollar features a 1963 portrait of President John F. Kennedy by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Gilroy Roberts. The reverse design, by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Frank Gasparro, depicts a heraldic eagle with shield, reminiscent of the presidential seal.
Since 1980, the mint mark (P for Philadelphia, D for Denver, and S for San Francisco) is located on the obverse at the truncation of the bust.
