Seemingly the most difficult date in the series in grades VF-AU, 1924-S is also quite rare in mint state. Although largely spared the technical problems that plague other key dates, it is rare by virtue of its poor survivorship in desirable grades. 1924-S nickels are much scarcer than the vaunted 1926-S in grades VF-AU, though both are rare in mint state. In fact, these two dates are tied for first/second place with the lowest certified mint state populations.
Most 1924-S nickels seen are adequately struck in general terms. Fully struck pieces are seldom available, a situation that is aggravated by the relatively small population of mint state coins for this date. The biggest striking deficiency seems to be the bison’s horn, which is frequently incomplete.
