After three years of frozen dates and back dated coins, normal production resumed for 1967, though mintmarks wouldn't be restored until the following year. Thus, many collectors don't realize that all 1967 nickels were coined at Denver, aside from the Special Mint Set coins struck at San Francisco.
This is yet another issue that is notable for poor details, though gems are not especially rare otherwise. Coins having either 5FS or 6FS are exceedingly rare.
The Mint's Special Mint Sets were not a hit with collectors, as their quality was not equal to that of true proofs, while their price was higher than for the preceding proof sets. Thus, sales fell to fewer than two million sets in 1967.
On the plus side, the SMS coins of 1967 were of superior quality to those dated 1965-66. In some respects they were actually better than the first new proof sets issued in 1968, though this fact was not appreciated until many years later.
