Numismatist and author Rick Snow reported in his book on this series that the cents of 1893 were all produced from recoined cents and two-cent pieces of earlier years. The U. S. Mint was continuing its boycott of commercial vendors until they lowered their prices for ready-to-coin planchets.
1893 is a very common date in this coin series, with only fully red gems being a challenge to locate.
