Starting in 1992, the United States Mint began offering the Silver Proof Set, containing the half dollar, quarter, and dime struck in the traditional composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. This product became a mainstay of the annual numismatic line up and added an additional version of the Kennedy Half Dollar for collectors.

The 1992-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar had a mintage of 1,317,579, which was the total sales level for the 1992 Silver Proof Set. Since this mintage would prove high compared to later years, the value of the half dollar is driven primarily based on its net silver content of 0.36169 troy ounces.

The US Mint continued to offer the annual proof set with the half dollar struck in the standard composition of copper and nickel.

Finally, circulation strike half dollars were produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. These coins were distributed through Federal Reserve Banks to the channels of circulation and also included in the annual mint set. The production level increased compared to the prior year to more than 23 million at each mint facility.
