Collector demand for the United States Mint's annual proof sets and silver proof sets declined for this year. This drove down the mintage levels for the coins included in each of the sets, including the 1995-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollars.
The standard clad proof version actually recorded the lowest mintage for a proof coin of the series to date. The 90% silver proof version also the lowest for its kind at 679,985. These low mintage figures would result in premiums being attached to these two issues as semi-keys for a complete set. Ultimately, future issues would produce even lower mintage levels, but the particular allure of this date remains.
Circulation strike versions of the coin continued with relatively robust production of more than 26 million pieces each from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
