Beginning in 2010, the United States Mint will issue quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites in accordance with the "America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008" (Act)(Public Law 110-456). Each year, you will see five new national site designs depicted on the reverse of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters issued in the order the selected site was first established as a national site. The new designs will be emblematic of a national park or other national site in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories – the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The familiar "restored" 1932 John Flanagan portrait of George Washington will be featured on the obverse of the quarters.

The Act requires the Secretary of the Treasury to select a national site to be honored with a coin in each of the 56 host jurisdictions. The Secretary approved the list of sites recommended by the United States Mint on August 25, 2009. Under the provisions of the site selection process, the Secretary officially consulted with the governor or other chief executive of each host jurisdiction and the Secretary of the Interior prior to final approval.

The design selection process and site and design selection criteria closely emulated the processes the United States Mint used to select designs for the 50 State Quarters® and 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Programs.

In January 2009, the United States Mint began working closely with representatives from each host jurisdiction to identify eligible national sites for depiction on the new quarters. Once sites were identified, United States Mint officials collaborated with officials from the Department of the Interior's National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as the Department of Agriculture's U.S. Forest Service, to determine a candidate site's eligibility and the dates on which the sites were first established by Congressional or executive action, creating, reserving or protecting the national site for its natural or historic significance.

Pursuant to Title II of the Act, "Bullion Investment Products," the United States Mint will also mint and make available for sale silver bullion quarter-dollar coins that are exact duplicates of each of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters. The bullion coins will be made of .999 fine silver, have a diameter of three inches and weigh five ounces. The fineness and weight will be edge-incused on the bullion coins. They will be issued under the United States Mint America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin™ Program.

Program Background

• The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a multi-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories—the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
• Under this program, five new reverse designs will appear on the quarter-dollar each year beginning in 2010 and through 2021.
• The coins will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site.
• The 2010 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters will be released in the following order:
• Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas
  
• Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
  
• Yosemite National Park, California
• Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
  
• Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon
• This program immediately follows the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program.
• The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters are legal tender coinage, issued by the United States Mint and available in general circulation.

• The United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program designs will be displayed on the reverse (tails) of the quarters, while the obverse (heads) will bear the familiar "restored" 1932 John Flanagan image of George Washington.
• The designs will be developed through a consultative process involving the governor or other chief executive of each host jurisdiction, the U.S. Department of the Interior and U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, and will be selected after review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
• The Secretary of the Treasury will approve all final designs.
