The coining of five-cent pieces plunged during 1909, though the 11+ million nickels produced that year was a low figure only in comparison to surrounding dates. Poor strikes are less often seen than for other 1900-12 nickels.

From this date through 1912 the date was applied to the obverse master die for the year, so the re-punched dates and misplaced dates common to earlier years no longer occurred.
