This coin is similar to its P-Mint counterpart, with choice mint state pieces being only slightly less common. Gems are available, although most seen are toned rather than fully brilliant.

Unlike its brothers from the east and west coasts, the Denver Mint Type 1 nickel is almost always well struck. In fact, it often makes a far superior example for a type set. These coins are typically quite lustrous, with the textured surfaces unique to the Type 1 nickels. Golden toning, sometimes accompanied by peripheral, rainbow coloring, is not unusual for this issue, which was saved in large numbers by the non-numismatic public.

The D mintmark is small and of the type first used on the cents of 1911. It remained in use as late as 1917.

Like 1913(P), this issue has posted handsome price gains in the circulated grades.

Varieties:

  • Minor doubling of the Indian’s profile and the date is common. This is mechanical or strike doubling rather than a doubled die, and it carries no premium value.
  • Also known for this date is a “two-feathers” variety (FS-1913D-401) on which the Indian’s shallow, innermost feather has been removed from the die through heavy polishing. This action was usually taken in response to a die clash. When the dies struck one another without a planchet between them, each received an inverted impression of the other. These ghost-like lines then appeared on each coin made from the dies until a workman removed the marks with an abrasive. Two-feathers varieties are known for several dates and are becoming increasingly popular.
