1937-D nickels are common in all grades through MS-66. Just two certified MS-68 examples are noted. Original rolls likely exist.

An abundance of mint state pieces from the many hoarded rolls means that a bit of selective shopping will turn up an ideal specimen. Most 1937-D nickels have very good to excellent luster that is typically frosty.

The dies for this issue were used far too long, and they reveal light to very heavy erosion. The latter is seen most prominently of the Three-legged variety. While coins struck from eroded dies are unappealing to me, the coin market does not place much emphasis on die state, and such coins can sometimes receive very high grades on account of their good luster.

Varieties:

  • One of the most well known and popular varieties in this or any series is the 1937-D Three-legged buffalo. It was discovered early on and has captured the imagination of coin hunters ever since. Inclusion in the Red Book (A Guide Book of United States Coins) and most coin albums has secured its place on collectors’ want lists.
  • Five re-punched mintmark varieties are illustrated in Wexler/Miller, with one being triple punched. Breen lists a possible D/S variety (B-2653), but this remains in dispute. It is alternatively described as D/D or D/D/S.
