1940 D nickels were quite well made, with most having good strikes and very pleasing luster. Gems are thus plentiful, and so too are coins having 5FS or 6FS, as this issue is among the more available ones with sharp steps.
A couple of re-punched mintmark (RPM) varieties have been reported, but these have not developed much of a following with general collectors.
