The 2006 Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin Set is the third and final set in this series. The design featured on the 2006 Return to Monticello nickel will remain in circulation for years to come. This year, the Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin Set features three nickels, including one uncirculated Philadelphia "P" mint mark nickel, one uncirculated Denver "D" mint mark nickel and one proof San Francisco "S" mint mark nickel. The coins are sealed in a clear, protective lens.
The obverse design features a forward-looking portrait of President Thomas Jefferson, titled "Jefferson, 1800." This design is based on a Rembrandt Peale portrait of Jefferson, painted in 1800.
The reverse design features the 1938 classic rendition of President Jefferson's Virginia home at Monticello by Felix Schlag. The design has been carefully restored by the United States Mint using Schlag's original work. During more than 65 years of production, the United States Mint had slightly modified the reverse design for technical reasons.
