Beginning in 1999, The United States Mint introduced a ten-year initiative (1999-2008) Honoring each of the 50 States with a commemorative quarter. Each year five new commemorative quarters are introduced for public circulation about every ten weeks or so. On the "tails" side of each coin, a design celebrates each state's major accomplishment, landmark, landscape, state flower, or resources -- all within an outline of that particular state. The U.S. Mint temporarily suspended production of the 'Eagle' quarter.
