This is the highest mintage date in the series, and it remains among the most common issues in all grades.
The quality of strike varies from average to excellent for this issue. It appears that most coins were made from properly set dies, but these dies were permitted to wear until they became quite distorted by erosion.
Varieties:
- One obverse doubled die is known, but it’s evident only as extra thickness in the date and LIBERTY (FS-1936-101).
- A similar variety may be found for the reverse (FS-1936-801).
- At least one cud break is also known for the reverse. This is in the commonly seen location that gives the bison the appearance of wearing a cap.
