A redundancy of cents in circulation drove down the demand for additional pieces, and this ushered in a four-year stretch of low mintage issues beginning in 1869. This date is highly sought across all grades, and Mint State red pieces are quite rare.
Two of the three repunched date varieties listed at left are quite similar in appearance yet very different in rarity. The more popular one is FS-301 (Snow-3), which is rare only in high grades. VP-003 (Snow-4) is nearly indistinguishable and often mis-attributed as the more common variety. The most certain way to tell them apart is by comparing the relative position of numeral 1 to the denticles below it.
