1896 is the last of a trio of low-mintage issues that kicked off in 1894. The Panic of 1893 and its aftermath were to blame for such reduced demand.

Mint State survivors are scarce for this date, with gems being in short supply. Even circulated coins grading F 12 and higher are elusive and on many collectors' want lists. Less than fully struck examples are the norm
