The U.S. Mint began offering uncirculated mint sets for sale to collectors in 1947. In certain years, uncirculated U.S. Mint sets contained coins that were only produced to fill these U.S. Mint sets and were not released for commerce.
This 2005 United States Mint set is the 56th year of issue. In 2005 the set stayed the same as the 2004 set, 22 coins, but the entire set was introduced as a "Satin Finish" or "Specimen Set" for the first time in history! A "Satin Finish" coin is one that the dies are sand-blasted with a fine mixture of sand and glass beads, and this adds a luster to their shine.
This 2005 Uncirculated U.S. Mint coin set includes 22 coins:
- 2 Lincoln cents
- Four Westward Journey Series Nickels*
- 2 Roosevelt dimes
- 10 state quarters: 2 each for the states California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia.
- 2 Kennedy half dollars
- 2 Sacagawea dollars
*Special Features: Includes two each of the 2005 special-edition “Bison†and “Ocean-In-View†Nickels struck at the Philadelphia and Denver branches of the U.S. Mint as part of the Westward Journey series.
