Most 1960(P) nickels are of so-so quality, though they are generally superior in both luster and strike to 1960 D nickels. Some may be faintly prooflike, and these were most likely struck from retired proof dies. Coins having any degree of sharp steps are rare.

The typical 1960 D nickel is poorly struck with just average luster. The deeper part of the dies didn't fill on most, exposing the roughness of the pre-strike planchet. Full step coins are exceedingly rare.

Several, very minor, DDR varieties are known, but RPMs are surprisingly few for such a large mintage.
