Circulated examples of this date are fairly common, as are Mint State pieces of average quality. True gems are scarce, as the planchets used for 1889 cents had a tendency to produce streaks from incomplete mixing of the alloy.

This date is rich in varieties, including at least two doublied-die reverses.
